On June 9, the results of a survey published by IPEC in the newspaper O Globo showed that the approval rating for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is gradually decreasing after more than 5 months since the leader officially returned to power.

Specifically, the positive assessment of President Lula da Silva's performance in governing the country in May 2023 reached only 37%, down 2% compared to April and down 4% compared to March. Meanwhile, the disapproval rate increased to 28% from 26% and 24% in the previous two months.

In particular, Mr. Lula da Silva's approval rating has even dropped sharply in the northeastern states of Brazil - the localities that have always been considered the "traditional strongholds" of this leader and where he won the most votes in the presidential election last October.

Some of Brazil's recent positive economic indicators may not yet be felt by voters on the ground, according to IPEC Executive Director Marcia Cavallari.

Brazil's economy grew more than expected in the first quarter of 2023 and inflation hit its lowest level in more than two years, good news for consumers.

However, disagreements with Congress have made it difficult for President Lula da Silva's government to fulfill its commitments to environmental protection and indigenous rights.
