Reuters reported that this is part of the city government's efforts to apply modern technology to speed up the planting and restoration of forests that are increasingly declining.

The activity is part of a green initiative that focuses on using modern equipment to drop seeds from above in hard-to-reach forest areas that are difficult to sow using traditional methods.

The Rio de Janeiro city government, in collaboration with the start-up Morfo, launched the initiative on January 5. The selection and identification of areas where this new method can be applied requires an analysis of the land, soil characteristics and suitable native plant varieties.

The computer system, which is integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, will then determine the specific areas of land and the number of seeds to be dropped.

Each drone can carry and drop 180 seed pellets in 1 minute, which is 100 times faster than the conventional method of planting seeds by hand.

In addition, the use of high technology with the support of AI also helps to cut out the step of nurturing seedlings after germination and transporting them to the designated area for planting, a step that often takes months if applying the old method.

Since taking office in January 2023, President Lula da Silva's government has stepped up efforts to curb deforestation and pledged to make Brazil a partner in the fight against climate change.
