A study by Newcastle University and Oxford University and Imperial College London NHS Foundation Trusts, published in eClinicalMedicine, has demonstrated the capabilities of a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool called Dora.

Dora was developed and trained by Oxford University's subsidiary Ufonia, supported by the Oxford & Thames Valley Health Innovation Network, and acts as a "virtual" medical assistant.

In the new experiment, Dora was tasked with calling patients who had undergone cataract surgery three weeks earlier, answering their questions, gathering information to assess the patient's recovery status and making necessary decisions. This "virtual" assistant surprised everyone by making assessments and decisions that were completely consistent with the ophthalmologist and received positive feedback from the patients.

With the above results, Dora medical assistant is considered a safe, cost-effective alternative in many tasks, such as pre-operative patient consultation, application for other diseases; becoming an effective tool to help reduce the stress on human resources for the health system.
