Farmers from provinces in the Mekong Delta visited rice fields producing Hung Long 555 rice variety in the 2025 summer-autumn crop in Thanh Loc commune, Can Tho city.
Hung Long 555 is a short-term rice variety, capable of high yield, good rice quality and has export development potential. This rice variety is bred, produced and copyrighted by International Agricultural Seed Joint Stock Company (IAS). This rice variety has good resistance to many types of pests and adverse weather conditions, so it will help farmers reduce costs of care, fertilization and spraying pesticides, thereby creating conditions to improve production efficiency and increase income.
In Can Tho, Hung Long 555 rice has been provided by International Agricultural Seed Joint Stock Company to Mr. Tran Van Phuoc's household in Tan An hamlet, Thanh Loc commune, Vinh Thanh district, sowing on an area of more than 27 hectares in the winter-spring crop 2024-2025 and summer-autumn crop 2025. The results show that production efficiency has been improved and Mr. Phuoc's family income has also increased compared to before when growing other rice varieties. In the last winter-spring crop, the rice yield reached more than 1.3 tons of fresh rice/hectare of about 1,300m2, sold at 7,900 VND/kg, minus expenses, he earned more than 7 million VND/hectare. In the summer-autumn crop 2025, despite facing unfavorable production conditions due to erratic rain and sunshine, the rice field sown with Hung Long 555 variety still grew well and produced heavy rice grains, with beautiful bright rice colors. Mr. Tran Van Phuoc said: “In the summer-autumn crop of 2025, I have 40 hectares of land cultivating Hung Long 555 rice variety. I find this rice variety to be strong, with few pests and diseases, and low lodging, and the rice yield is high, about 1 ton/hectare, sold at 6,400 VND/kg. After deducting costs, I can earn more than 4 million VND/hectare, almost double the previous profit from cultivating other rice varieties.”
In the 2024-2025 winter-spring and 2025 summer-autumn rice crops, Hung Long 555 rice has been planted in fields in many provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta such as Can Tho City and the provinces of An Giang , Dong Thap, Long An... Many farmers participating in the cultivation of Hung Long 555 rice said that this rice variety is resistant to adverse production conditions, has few pests and diseases, and gives good yield and quality. In the summer-autumn crop, the production conditions are quite harsh due to intense heat at the beginning of the crop and thunderstorms at the end of the crop, but Hung Long 555 rice still grows well, the rice plants are strong, less prone to lodging and are resistant to pests and diseases, especially blast disease. Hung Long 555 rice is very suitable for expanding production in the Mekong Delta, especially in the context of the region implementing the Project on sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030 and proactively implementing solutions to adapt to climate change. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Chau Phu district, An Giang province, said: "I have participated in the production of Hung Long 555 rice for 2 rice crops. The results show that the rice has a stable and high yield. The rice plants are strong, less prone to lodging and have good resistance to pests and diseases compared to many old rice varieties that have been produced by farmers for many years. The rice has clear grains, sticky rice and a light aroma."
Mr. Duong Hoang Tan in Tan Ninh commune, Tan Thanh district, Long An province, said: "Hung Long 555 rice produces soft, non-blemished rice, sells for a high price and has a high yield, thereby helping farmers increase their income. Hopefully, this rice variety will be known by many farmers and businesses to boost production and export purchases, creating conditions for many farmers to improve production efficiency". According to Mr. Nguyen Van Don in Tan Lap commune, Tan Thanh district, Long An province, he has participated in cultivating 3.6 hectares of Hung Long 555 rice in the summer-autumn crop of 2025. Up to now, the rice is more than 50 days old and is growing very well. Compared to many other rice varieties, this rice variety has good resistance to harsh weather conditions of the summer-autumn crop and has few pests and diseases, so farmers can reduce costs for care and spraying pesticides.
According to Mr. Le Ngoc Anh, Director of IAS, author of Hung Long 555 rice variety, this rice variety was researched and selected since 2013 and by 2022 it was recognized for circulation in the provinces and cities of the Central Highlands and South Central Coast, in 2023 it was recognized for circulation in the provinces of the North Central and Northern Midlands and Mountains, and in 2024 it was recognized for circulation in the provinces and cities of the Southeast and Mekong Delta. Through the process of testing and producing this rice variety in regions across the country, it has been shown that the rice has the ability to adapt well to the production conditions of different crops and is resistant to many types of pests and diseases. Rice is cultivated in many fields in the Mekong Delta with a yield of up to 11-12 tons of fresh rice/ha. The growing period of rice is from 90-105 days, depending on the crop. The milled rice rate is approximately 70%. The rice is long, clear, has a light aroma, rich flavor, is soft and sticky and is popular in the market.
