On June 13, Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment, in collaboration with the University of Sydney (Australia) and the University of Natural Sciences - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, organized a workshop on "Application of immersive technology and artificial intelligence in enhancing crisis resilience".
The workshop was attended by Dr. Joel Fredericks (University of Sydney), Ms. Sarah Hooper, Australian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, along with many experts and scientists from universities and authorities in Vietnam.

At the workshop, speakers focused on discussing the application of immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in disaster risk reduction, especially floods, subsidence and landslides.
Dr. Joel Fredericks shares research on using immersive technology and AI to connect stakeholders in crisis management, support communication, and build effective response plans.
Vietnamese experts also presented the current situation of subsidence and high tides in Ho Chi Minh City, with an average subsidence rate of 2-5cm/year, up to 7-8cm/year in some places. Some solutions integrating AI and geographic information systems (GIS) were introduced to forecast river water levels and support urban management.
Associate Professor Dr. Huynh Quyen said that the cause of flooding is not only due to inadequate infrastructure but also due to lack of assessment and coordination throughout the life cycle of projects. The application of GIS can help simulate situations before investment, evaluate effectiveness after construction, thereby optimizing costs and improving transparency.
At the event, participants experienced flood simulations through VR glasses in heavily flooded areas in Ho Chi Minh City such as Districts 2, 7 and 8. They then participated in a survey to evaluate the effectiveness and potential application of the technology in planning and crisis response policies.
The workshop not only contributes to promoting cooperation between Vietnamese and Australianeducational institutions but also opens up a new approach in disaster warning and response using modern technology.
