Compared to 2019, the number of preschool children by June 2025 in Ho Chi Minh City decreased by 26,445 children.

This figure was given by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training at the summary meeting of the Preschool Education Development Project for the 2019-2025 period on June 19.

Accordingly, as of June 19, Ho Chi Minh City currently has 404,758 preschool children, of which the number of children of nursery age is 43,653 children, and kindergarten children is 361,105. Compared to the 2018-2019 school year, the total number of children decreased by 26,445, believed to be due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, children followed their parents to the countryside and did not return to the city.

Although the number of children in preschool has decreased, the project's objectives have produced remarkable results. The project's objective in the content of child care and education quality is that in the period 2019-2025, at least 99.5% of preschool groups and classes will study 2 sessions/day.

The rate of underweight children decreased by an average of 0.3% per year. The rate of stunted children decreased by an average of 0.2% per year. The rate of overweight children decreased by an average of 0.2% per year and the rate of overweight and obese children was controlled.

With that goal, after 5 years, the total number of preschool groups and classes studying 2 sessions/day in Ho Chi Minh City reached 100%. The rate of underweight malnourished children decreased by 12.37%. The rate of stunted children decreased by 6.59%. The rate of overweight and obese children decreased by 9.92%.

Similarly, other contents such as the scale of the school network, the teaching staff, school facilities, and universal preschool education all gave good results.

Specifically, the rate of mobilization of nursery classes reached 35.8%; the rate of mobilization of preschool children reached 90.6%; the rate of children in non-public preschools reached 50.4%.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the rate of preschool teachers with professional qualifications of good or higher is currently 86.8%. The rate of universal education for 5-year-old children is 99.1%. The rate of 5-year-old children studying 2 sessions/day is 100%.

As of June 19, Ho Chi Minh City had 1,228 kindergartens, of which 474 were public and 754 were non-public. Compared to the 2018-2019 school year, Ho Chi Minh City reduced 68 schools, of which 7 public kindergartens increased and 75 private schools decreased.

The total number of independent preschools is 2,024, an increase of 473 groups and classes compared to the 2018-2019 school year (1,551 facilities). The total number of groups and classes in the school is 15,609, an increase of 3,003 groups and classes compared to the 2018-2019 school year (12,606 groups).

What is the preschool education development project for the period 2019-2025?

The Project on Preschool Education Development for the period 2019-2025 was issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee based on the Prime Minister's decision approving the Project on Preschool Education Development for the period 2018-2025 and the decision dated April 19, 2019 of the Ministry of Education and Training on promulgating the plan to implement the Project on Preschool Education Development for the period 2018-2025.

This project is implemented with the view that preschool education is the first level of the national education system, laying the foundation for physical, intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic development, forming basic personality factors for children before entering grade 1.

Taking care of preschool education development to ensure that all children have access to quality, fair and equal preschool education is the responsibility of all levels, sectors, each family and the whole society.
