US President Donald Trump announced on July 7 that at least 14 countries will face high tariffs on imports into the world's largest economy , starting August 1.

In a series of posts on the social network Truth Social, Mr. Trump shared screenshots of sample letters sent to the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos and Myanmar to announce the new tariffs.

Late on July 7, the US leader continued to publish a series of 7 other letters sent to the leaders of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Tunisia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia and Thailand.

According to the letters posted by President Trump, goods imported into the US from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Tunisia will be subject to a 25% tariff. Goods imported from South Africa and Bosnia & Herzegovina will be taxed at 30%, while goods from Indonesia will be taxed at 32%.

Bangladesh and Serbia will both be hit with a 35% tariff, while Cambodia and Thailand will be hit with a 36% tariff. Imports from Laos and Myanmar will face a 40% tariff.

The letters, signed by Mr. Trump, stress that the United States “may” consider adjusting the new tariffs. These are the first letters sent before July 9, when the “reciprocal” tariffs announced by the US leader in early April are expected to return to higher levels.

All letters emphasize that these general tariffs are separate from additional sectoral tariffs on strategic goods. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said more letters would be sent in the coming days.

On the afternoon of July 7 (local time), President Trump also signed an executive order postponing the tax deadline from July 9 to August 1. According to this order, the decision was made “based on additional information and recommendations from various senior officials”./.
