Russian President chairs Eurasian Economic Union summit

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit kicked off on December 25 local time in the Russian city of St. Petersburg.

This is an opportunity for leaders to assess the results of Russia's presidency of the alliance as well as consider opportunities for further economic integration among the five member states.

The leaders are expected to agree on important decisions and adopt a number of documents, including a statement on the development of the EAEU in 2024-2030 as well as in the next two decades.

The leaders will also attend a two-day informal meeting of heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), an intergovernmental organization that brings together former Soviet states.

The EAEU was founded by the leaders of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in 2014. In 2015, the EAEU added two more members: Armenia and Kyrgyzstan.

According to experts, with reasonable policies in recent years, the EAEU continues to be a place connecting the economies of European countries with the Asia- Pacific region, opening up opportunities for common prosperity for member countries and partners.
