Mexican President Nominates New Foreign Minister

Alicia Barcena will replace Marcelo Ebrard, who has just resigned to seek the opportunity to become a candidate for the Mexican presidency next September.

On June 13, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador nominated veteran UN diplomat Alicia Barcena as the new Foreign Minister.

She served for 14 years as Executive Secretary of the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and has been Mexico's Ambassador to Chile since September last year.

Speaking at a press conference, President Obrador said: "She is a professional diplomat, a woman of conviction and principles. She will support us in the final stages of this government ."

The decision to appoint Ms. Barcena to the position of foreign minister must be approved by the Mexican Senate, although this step is only a procedural step.

Previously, on June 12, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard resigned to seek the opportunity to become the presidential candidate of the National Reconstruction Movement (MORENA) party in the June 2024 election.

According to El Financiero (Mexico), the party will vote from August 28 to September 3 to choose a candidate to run for election, adding that the candidate must leave his current position before June 16.

Under the Mexican Constitution, the president has a single six-year term. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is expected to leave office in September 2024.
