Despite having to face a tough opponent right from the first round, Nguyen Thuy Linh (ranked 22nd in the world ) still excelled in creating a big surprise at the 2025 World Badminton Championships in Paris, when she defeated former world number 1 Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand, ranked 10).
After 45 minutes of play, Thuy Linh convincingly won 2-0 (21-17, 21-18), affirming her perseverance and courage at key moments.

The match witnessed many fierce tug-of-wars, but Thuy Linh always knew how to speed up at the end of the set to finish the match neatly. This was the second time in her career that she had overcome Ratchanok, after winning the Thailand Open in early 2024.
Ratchanok Intanon is a Thai badminton icon, having held the world No. 1 position in 2016, won the 2013 World Championship at the age of 18, and won a series of major titles in Asia and the SEA Games. Therefore, Thuy Linh's victory is meaningful, not only raising her personal status but also leaving a strong mark on Vietnamese badminton.
Entering the second round, Vietnam's No. 1 tennis player will face Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour (ranked 28th in the world). This is considered a moderate challenge, opening up a great opportunity for Thuy Linh to participate in the third round of this prestigious tournament for the first time.
Another representative of Vietnam, Le Duc Phat, lost in the opening round to Belgian opponent Julien Carrggi with a score of 1-2 (20-22, 21-16, 9-21).
