The goal conceded in the last minute of extra time made the Vietnamese team regretfully lose 2-3 to Iraq.

The Vietnamese team entered the final match of the 2023 Asian Cup with high determination. Coach Philippe Troussier and his students wanted to create a good performance to say goodbye to the tournament with a good image, while reducing the pressure after 2 losses. The Vietnamese team played well in the first half of the match but not enough to get a point.

With some changes in the main lineup, the Vietnamese team entered the match confidently. Coach Troussier's players proactively pressed high, competing for the ball with their opponents. The attack line with the participation of Nguyen Dinh Bac and Khuat Van Khang was active.

In the 17th minute, an Iraqi player scored an own goal after Vo Minh Trong put the ball into the penalty area. However, the referee reviewed the situation and determined that Van Khang was offside and had obstructed his opponent's play. The Vietnamese team's goal was canceled.

Do Hung Dung and his teammates maintained a good game and the result came at the end of the first half. In the 42nd minute, Bui Hoang Viet Anh - one of the few Vietnamese players who played well in all 3 matches at the 2023 Asian Cup - received a pass from Van Khang to score the opening goal. However, just a few minutes later, Van Khang himself put his team in a difficult position when he received a second yellow card and was sent off.

The Vietnamese team played with great effort against Iraq.

Vietnam entered the second half with one less player. Iraq dominated. The West Asian team played sparingly but still scored a goal with a simple scenario. The high ball is still a dangerous "weapon" of the Iraqi team - just like how they defeated the Vietnamese team in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Rebin Ghareeb and Aymen Hussein headed the ball into the Vietnamese net in the second half. Both of Iraq's goals came from crosses from the left wing by Ali Jasim.

The West Asian team almost had a third goal but the Vietnamese team was lucky to escape a penalty. The Iraqi striker hit the post.

The surprise happened in extra time. In a rare attacking situation, Nguyen Thanh Binh assisted Nguyen Quang Hai to score the equalizer for the Vietnamese team. However, in the last minute of the match, Iraq was awarded a penalty and this time, striker Hussein did not miss, helping the West Asian team win 3-2.

Result: Vietnam 2-3 Iraq

Vietnam National Team: Viet Anh (42"), Quang Hai (90+1")

Iraq: Ghareeb (47“), Hussein (73”, 90+12')
