The talks come as Australia seeks to end informal bans and tariffs that China imposed on some Australian products in 2020, when diplomatic relations between the two countries were at a low point.

Asked about the timing of the visit, Mr Albanese said: "We will set a date at the appropriate time," adding that his next overseas trip will be in July for a NATO summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

He added that Australia would continue to advocate for the removal of all obstacles to trade between "two great nations".

“It's in Australia's interest to export to China, but it's also in China's interest to receive those exports,” he said.

In May, China said it would resume imports of Australian timber following a visit to Beijing by Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell. A visit by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in December last year also helped resume coal exports.
