(QBĐT) - In recent years, Tien Hoa commune (Tuyen Hoa) has actively promoted and mobilized people to change crop structure to improve economic efficiency per unit area. In particular, sugarcane has affirmed its effectiveness, bringing high income to people.

These days, farmers in Tien Hoa commune are busy harvesting key crops such as rice, corn, peanuts, etc. In addition, sugarcane growers also take advantage of the time to weed, prune leaves or cut sugarcane to sell to wholesalers during the summer.
Visiting the model of Mr. Pham Thanh Hai in Tay Truc village, we were impressed by the lush green sugarcane fields, rows after rows, and the sugarcane stalks with beautiful golden yellow color. Mr. Hai said that the sugarcane he grows is a sugarcane variety, very sweet, mainly used to squeeze juice to sell in the hot summer. Currently, his family is selling wholesale to wholesalers at 4,000 VND/kg. In addition, Mr. Hai's wife also opened a sugarcane juice shop, earning nearly double the wholesale price. At the end of the summer, his family uses any sugarcane fields that have not been sold out to process into molasses, selling at a high price.
Mr. Pham Thanh Hai shared that previously on these plots of land, his family grew rice and corn but the income was not high. In 2023, with the propaganda and mobilization of the local Party Committee and government to change the crop structure, he boldly switched to growing sugarcane. After more than 2 years of growing sugarcane, he realized that this is an easy-to-grow crop, with little investment capital, easy to care for, and high yield. Therefore, from about 3 sao of sugarcane initially planted as a trial, his family has now expanded sugarcane cultivation to an area of 5,000m2 , earning an annual income of about 160 million VND.

“Compared to rice and corn, sugarcane cultivation is three times more profitable, but the investment capital and care are low. Because sugarcane cultivation only requires one planting, then the roots are left for 5-6 years, and the following crops only require fertilization and weeding once. The hardest part of sugarcane cultivation is setting stakes, stringing ropes to keep the plants upright, preventing them from falling or breaking, and pruning old leaves from the sugarcane,” Hai shared.
Unlike Mr. Pham Thanh Hai, Mr. Nguyen Phu Sanh's family in Trung Thuy village does not grow sugarcane to sell in the summer but to make molasses, so the planting time is usually at the end of the year. Currently, sugarcane is in the early stages of its growth cycle. This is also the stage when the leaves begin to be pruned and measures are taken to prevent sugarcane from falling.
Mr. Sanh said that his family regularly grows 2 sao of sugarcane, harvests it at the end of the year every year, then presses the juice and cooks it into molasses to sell during Tet. The value of sugarcane is much higher than that of other crops. That is why people in Trung Thuy village have maintained the profession of growing sugarcane and making molasses for many years. The whole village has more than 20 households growing sugarcane with an area of about 2.5 hectares. "One sao of sugarcane field can produce 200 liters of molasses, the current market price is 120,000 VND/liter. Thus, each sao of sugarcane land brings in an income of over 20 million VND/year," Mr. Sanh said.
Tien Hoa is a key economic zone of Tuyen Hoa district. In recent years, due to the impact of industrialization and urbanization, agricultural land has gradually shrunk. Therefore, the locality has focused on propagating and mobilizing people to change crop structure to bring higher economic value per unit area. Currently, the whole commune has nearly 30 households growing sugarcane with an area of nearly 3 hectares, earning an annual income of over 500 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Quyet Chien, Vice Chairman of Tien Hoa Commune People's Committee (Tuyen Hoa) said: "Sugarcane is easy to grow on many different types of soil. This is a crop that produces high productivity and quality, bringing high economic efficiency, helping people gradually reduce poverty and become rich legitimately. Therefore, in addition to promoting and mobilizing people to expand the sugarcane growing area, the Commune People's Committee also organizes training and guides people on techniques for selecting varieties, how to care for and prevent pests and diseases, and improve the soil, etc.

In addition, Tien Hoa commune has also established the Lang Khien Molasses Cooperative (Trung Thuy village), bringing Lang Khien molasses products to participate in the OCOP program. In the coming time, Tien Hoa commune will continue to expand the sugarcane growing area, build a brand so that Lang Khien molasses is known by more people, consumed more widely, bringing high income to the people.
Sugarcane growing in Tien Hoa not only brings high income to people but also contributes to preserving and promoting a traditional profession, which is molasses making in Khien Village.
