Candidates surprised when university and college admission fees reduced by 25%

Despite a 25% reduction in university and college admission fees, the amount of money collected by the admission system is still more than 114 billion VND.

On the morning of July 29, candidates began paying their admission fees online on the Ministry of Education and Training's general admission system. Those who had completed paying their university and college admission fees were surprised to see that their actual payment was 25% less than the estimated amount.

According to Official Dispatch 2457/BGDĐT-GDĐH in 2025 on instructions for university and college admissions, from July 29 to 5:00 p.m. on August 5, candidates must pay admission fees according to the number of admission wishes online according to the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The fee has been set for many years at 20,000 VND/preference (the same as the registration fee for preferences in previous years). Candidates will pay based on the number of preferences they have registered. For example, if a candidate registers for 9 preferences, the amount to be paid is 180,000 VND.

According to a source of Thanh Nien Newspaper, on the evening of July 28, the Ministry of Education and Training requested units to help the Ministry deploy technical infrastructure services and electronic payments for candidates to reduce the fee collection on the system. The reduction is 5,000 VND/wish (25% reduction).

In fact, on the morning of July 29, when paying the admission fee on the admission portal, candidates only had to pay 15,000 VND/wish.

A leader of the Ministry of Education and Training also confirmed with Thanh Nien Newspaper that the admission fee for applications registered on the Ministry's common system this year is only 15,000 VND/application.

As reported by Thanh Nien Newspaper, this year the average number of admission wishes per candidate is very high, 9 wishes/candidate. At the same time, the number of candidates registering for admission on the system is also the highest ever.

As of 5:00 p.m. last night, July 28, the Ministry of Education and Training's system recorded that 849,544 candidates had entered their university and college admission wishes, equivalent to 73.2% of the number of candidates registering for the 2025 high school graduation exam, with 7,615,560 wishes.

In previous years, only about 600,000 to 730,000 candidates registered their wishes, with an insignificant average number of wishes/candidate (in 2023, it was more than 3 wishes/candidate).

Therefore, if collected at the old rate, the amount of money that the Ministry of Education and Training and the units providing technical infrastructure services and electronic payments will collect is estimated at more than 152 billion VND. With the adjustment as mentioned above, it is estimated that the system will collect more than 114 billion VND.
