On July 28, the US government said it would investigate the selection of editors of the Duke Law Journal to determine whether the selection process favored candidates from minority communities.
“The investigation was initiated based on recent reports that Duke University discriminated on the basis of race, color, and national origin when selecting members for its law journal,” the US Department of Education said.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sent a letter to Duke University leadership, accusing the school of favoring race in hiring, admissions and scholarship decisions.
The letter calls on the school to review its current policy and work with the federal government to promptly address the alleged violations. Duke University has not yet made an official comment.
Washington has threatened to cut federal funding to several universities over policies related to climate change, transgender rights and protests over the Gaza crisis. Title VI of the 1964 US Civil Rights Act prohibits federally funded educational programs from discriminating on the basis of race, color or national origin.
