Vietnam Sports has first place at Paris Olympics

Successfully defending the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Cycling Championship, cyclist Nguyen Thi That became the first Vietnamese athlete to win a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Nguyen Thi That finished first in the 109km mass start event, successfully defending her Asian championship title.

On June 12, at the 2023 Asian Cycling Championship held in Thailand, the Vietnamese Cycling Team had 15 riders participating. Coming to this tournament, the team's greatest hope is still placed on Nguyen Thi That, the reigning Asian champion.

Competing in the women's mass start event at a distance of 109 km, the Vietnamese team has 4 athletes, including: Nguyen Thi That, Nguyen Thi Thi, Nguyen Thi Thu Mai and Tran Thi Thuy Trang.

With effective support from her teammates, racer Nguyen Thi That was always in the top group and eventually finished first with a time of 2 hours 51 minutes 41 seconds, successfully defending her championship title.

This is the third time Nguyen Thi That has won the Asian tournament after 2018 and 2022.

According to the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, by winning the 2023 Asian Cycling Championship, Nguyen Thi That became the first Vietnamese athlete to win a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics. With this success, the girl from An Giang is also the first racer in the history of Vietnamese road cycling to participate in an Olympic tournament.

Nguyen Thi That, born in 1993, is a cyclist with remarkable achievements.

Starting to compete at the top level in the An Giang Television Cup in 2010, in 2013, she won a bronze medal at the 27th SEA Games - her first major international tournament.

In 2014, she won the silver medal at the Asian Games in Korea and then 5 consecutive gold medals at the SEA Games (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023). However, the peak of this athlete is 3 gold medals at the Asian Games in 2018, 2022, 2023.

In 2019, Nguyen Thi That joined the Lotto-Soudal Ladies racing team (Kingdom of Belgium), becoming the first Vietnamese cyclist to compete for a European racing team.

Nguyen Thi That won the gold medal at SEA Games 32.

The 2023 Asian Cycling Championship is one of the bases for determining the 2024 Paris Olympic spots for Asian riders.

According to the format announced by the International Cycling Federation in April 2023, athletes who win gold and silver medals at the Asian, African, and American championships will receive a special ticket to the 2024 Olympics.

At the 2024 Olympics, Vietnamese Sports strives to have about 15 athletes participating.
