Thai Thuy: Prevention of infectious diseases in summer

Hot weather mixed with sudden rains are typical of summer. This is also the time when infectious diseases such as dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, diarrhea, meningitis, etc. are easily spread and break out. Together with other localities in the province, Thai Thuy district has implemented many activities to proactively prevent and control epidemics.

The launching ceremony of general environmental sanitation and propaganda on disease prevention and control in the summer, focusing on Covid-19 and dengue fever in 2023, took place in Thai Xuyen commune (Thai Thuy), attracting the participation of many departments, branches, teachers and students in the commune. Not only providing information to people about common diseases in the summer, environmental sanitation measures to prevent and control diseases, at the launching ceremony, the leaders of the Provincial Center for Disease Control and the District People's Committee called on all people to raise their sense of responsibility to protect the living environment by regularly performing environmental sanitation. Responding to the call, immediately after the launching ceremony, many people, teachers and students of Thai Xuyen commune organized environmental sanitation, sprayed disinfectants and mosquito repellent in the commune.

Mr. Vu Trong Dat, Vice Chairman of Thai Xuyen Commune People's Committee, said: Local authorities at all levels always pay attention to disease prevention and control in the area, especially dengue fever. Every year, closely following the direction of the health sector, Thai Thuy district and the commune have developed programs and plans for disease prevention and control, deployed to departments, branches and villages; at the same time, propagandized and guided people to implement. Propaganda work is promoted in many forms such as: through commune radio stations, hanging billboards and posters from commune to village at crowded places, integrated through conferences. Propaganda content focuses on prevention and control measures; environmental sanitation, mosquito larvae destruction... so that people know and implement.

Together with Thai Xuyen commune, responding to the launching ceremony, communes and towns in the district organized environmental sanitation; maintained general environmental sanitation on the 24th of every month. Through review and synthesis, from the beginning of the year to May 7, Thai Thuy district recorded 2 cases of dengue fever, 13 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, 7 cases of adenovirus infection, 6 cases of chickenpox, more than 820 cases of diarrhea...

Mr. Le Tien Dai, Director of the District Health Center, shared: Every year, before the summer weather, the district launches a general environmental sanitation campaign to prevent and control epidemics. The purpose of the campaign is to raise responsibility, create changes in people's awareness as well as practice in preventing and controlling infectious diseases in general, dengue fever in particular; mobilize people to regularly kill mosquitoes and collect larvae. Currently, the epidemic is intertwined between re-emerging and newly-emerging diseases. Therefore, we determine that we cannot be subjective or negligent. In addition to promoting propaganda work, the Center regularly monitors and grasps the epidemic situation, coordinates with communes and towns to strengthen surveillance of epidemic prevention and control, and conduct investigations, tracing, and handling of epidemics when cases appear in the community. In the context of the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, the Center also directs health stations in communes and towns to focus on propagating to people to implement 2K well and get vaccinated, especially those at high risk; Coordination to screen families with people at high risk of Covid-19 and those who have not received enough doses of vaccine is still being carried out so that when a vaccine is available, vaccinations will be organized immediately.

To proactively prevent, control and contain possible epidemics or outbreaks; to be ready to respond quickly and effectively to epidemic situations; to ensure people's health and safety and to contribute to socio -economic development in the new situation, all levels, sectors, localities and units of the district have planned to implement many activities. However, to ensure effective prevention and control of summer epidemics, in addition to the efforts of all levels and sectors, people need to raise awareness in protecting their own health and that of their families.

Mr. Le Tien Dai added: Every family and every person should take time to clean their living, working and studying environment to avoid stagnant water creating an environment for mosquitoes to breed and transmit dengue fever; follow the 2K recommendations of the health sector and get vaccinated against Covid-19 fully and on schedule... Every small action will join hands, contribute to protecting people's health.
