(Dan Tri) - A US nuclear-powered submarine is believed to have been entangled in a fishing net off the northern coast of Norway.

The Norwegian fishing vessel Oygutt set out a new net after hauling in about 200kg of fish earlier this week. However, instead of a new catch, a 7,800-ton missile submarine was caught in the net.

"We were on our way back to the fish farm in Sommaroya when we were informed by the Coast Guard that a submarine had been caught in our nets," said Harald Engen, the captain of the fishing boat.

According to Norwegian media, the ship caught in the net appears to be the USS Virginia, a nuclear-powered, cruise-missile-equipped fast-attack submarine of the US Navy.

The US Navy said the ship was visiting Tromso, Norway, as part of an initiative to "protect the increasingly complex security environment in the High North".

The propeller of the 115-meter-long submarine was caught in a fishing net on November 11, but it took several days for Norwegian media and the US Navy to acknowledge what had happened.

US Navy 6th Fleet spokesman Lieutenant Pierson Hawkins said the incident was under investigation and would not confirm the name of the ship involved.

Norway is a founding member of NATO and borders Russia in the Arctic. The US has repeatedly sent naval ships to the region.
