Indian Navy Ship Mumbai Makes First Visit to Sri Lanka

Indian Naval Ship (INS) Mumbai docked at Colombo Port today, August 26, beginning its first three-day visit to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Navy accorded a grand welcome to INS Mumbai, the Indian Navy's flagship warship with a crew of 410. The Commanding Officer of INS Mumbai, Captain Sandeep Kumar, met Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe, Commander, Western Naval Command at the Western Naval Command headquarters.

“This is the first time that INS Mumbai has visited any port in Sri Lanka and the eighth time that an Indian ship has called this port this year,” a statement from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said.

INS Mumbai, the third Delhi-class destroyer, carries essential spares for Dornier maritime patrol aircraft operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), whose pilots and crews are being trained by the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy also supports aircraft maintenance with spares and technical staff.

During her stay in Colombo, INS Mumbai organised on-board practical programmes for Sri Lankan Naval officers, conducted joint activities with the Sri Lankan Navy such as sports exchanges, Yoga and beach clean-ups.

INS Mumbai, a domestically built ship, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 22, 2001.

Earlier this year, INS Kabra, Karanj, Kamorta and Shalki visited Sri Lanka, apart from Indian Coast Guard ships Samarth, Abhinav and Sachet.
