Regiment 971 is stationed in Hoa Khanh Nam Ward (Lien Chieu District). This is a mountainous area. Increasing production, especially planning and building vegetable gardens, faces many difficulties. With the determination to promote increased production and improve meals for soldiers, the Party Committee and Command of Regiment 971 focused on researching, discussing, and proposing many policies and measures to remove and overcome difficulties, focusing on exploiting and making full use of all favorable conditions with many good, creative, and effective ways.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Minh Thao, Commander of Regiment 971, said: “Every year, the Party Committee of the Regiment and Party Committees at all levels develop specialized resolutions on leadership, develop production increase plans, and make plans in accordance with the policies of superiors and the logistics and technical sector, suitable for conditions and highly feasible. Production increase areas are consolidated, repaired, upgraded, and expanded every year, ensuring adequate supply of all kinds of food for soldiers according to the season.”
Up to now, the total cultivation area of the unit is 14,422m2, growing all kinds of vegetables, tubers, fruits, squash, luffa, green beans, spices, medicinal herbs, water plants, fruit trees, etc. All growing plots have drainage systems and automatic irrigation systems to help save labor and time for soldiers, while also saving water resources. In the garden, there are always at least 16 types of leafy vegetables, tubers and fruits that are rotated to suit weather, climate and soil conditions, are regularly cared for and grow well. The unit organizes intercropping, builds a warehouse to store vegetables, tubers and fruits to ensure that during the inter-crop period, it provides enough meat and fish for soldiers' daily meals by regularly raising more than 100 pigs, cows, goats, 800 poultry, 2,000 fish fry, etc.
Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Nuoi, Head of Logistics and Engineering, City Military Command, commented: “Regiment 971 in recent years has been a true example of the city's armed forces' efforts to increase production. The unit has focused on researching and applying science and technology such as building bio-fertilizer and manure compost tanks that ensure hygiene, have covers, and compost effectively. In addition, it has invested in an automatic watering system in the vegetable garden, has a coconut fiber grinder, a chicken and duck plucking machine, and a bean mold making machine to serve the military kitchen. In particular, there are initiatives that bring high quality, efficiency, and can be replicated such as a semi-automatic bean sprout incubator, a level I Hoang Cam kitchen training model...”.
To participate in the contest "Green, clean, beautiful vegetable garden associated with meal quality and soldiers' health" in 2025 organized by Military Region 5 recently, with financial support from the City Military Command and the unit's capital fund of nearly 780 million VND, the Regiment mobilized more than 3,000 working days of officers and soldiers to consolidate, repair, expand the production area, renew the truss system, replace the roof net, renovate the sign system, and regular boards; at the same time, renovate and repair concrete roads and synchronously carry out other contents to ensure participation in the contest. The dining area and kitchen for new soldiers were also invested in renovating degraded and damaged items, arranged uniformly, neatly, spaciously and airy.
Thanks to the good performance in increasing production, the unit's logistics sector proactively builds a menu of dishes, a detailed menu that is consistent with the priority of using quality products to improve meals for soldiers such as: pork, beef, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, bean sprouts, pickles, vegetables and fruits of all kinds... The unit regularly launches the movement "Building a unit that feeds soldiers well, manages military supplies well", creating a vibrant competitive atmosphere among officers and soldiers, promoting the spirit of work and creativity; arousing motivation for individuals and collectives to promote initiatives and improve techniques. Thereby improving the productivity and quality of increasing production, ensuring that soldiers eat well, eat up to standards, the unit's annual healthy army always reaches 99.5%, successfully completing assigned tasks.
