This afternoon, June 7, Duc Giang General Hospital ( Hanoi ) announced that the hospital's doctors had successfully treated a victim who suffered a severed femoral artery, severe blood loss and was in critical condition due to a traffic accident while opening a car door.

The patient received emergency care, timely blood transfusion, and is recovering after an accident that severed the femoral artery.

Doctors said that before being admitted to the hospital, while opening the car door, patient Q. was hit from behind by a motorbike.

The strong collision caused the patient to suffer injuries to the groin and left thigh, causing profuse bleeding. He was taken by passersby straight to the Emergency Department (Duc Giang General Hospital).

About 10 minutes after admission, the patient began to show signs of hemorrhagic shock, and was quickly given emergency treatment with a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding. The on-duty team raised the alarm and rushed the patient straight to the operating room. Here, when the bandage was removed, blood flowed in large streams, and the doctors immediately proceeded to clamp and stop the bleeding with a vascular clamp.

Through examination, doctors discovered that the patient had a lateral femoral artery wound, femoral artery injury, superficial circumflex iliac artery rupture, femoral nerve injury, and crushed many tissues around the wound.

The patient underwent surgery to repair the femoral artery and vein and associated injuries.

By this afternoon, June 7, the 4th postoperative day, the patient was awake, had good contact, and could move the injured leg; the extremity was warm and pink, the dorsum and calcaneus pulses were clear, and there was still numbness in the lower middle third of the inner thigh on the injured side.

Before and during surgery, the patient lost about 3 liters of blood, and was transfused about 1.8 liters during surgery. The patient is being monitored and treated intensively at the Department of Surgical Resuscitation and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.

Doctor Nguyen Van Lam (Department of General Surgery, Duc Giang General Hospital), who directly performed surgery on patient Q., said: "This is a case of a large peripheral vascular wound, causing a lot of blood loss, which can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. In cases of peripheral vascular wounds or large blood vessels, the victim needs to be quickly inserted with gauze into the bleeding wound, then tightly bandaged and taken to the nearest medical facility that can provide specialist intervention."
