Late in the afternoon of July 22, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Manh Khanh, Deputy Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital ( Hanoi ) chaired an online consultation with Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital on emergency care and treatment of victims of the Pa Thom suspension bridge collapse.
Of the three patients in the car that fell into the river, Mr. LXT (43 years old) was diagnosed with multiple trauma shock, in critical condition, and will be transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for further treatment.
The remaining two patients, VBL (34 years old, Dien Bien) with a closed chest injury and TKT (57 years old, Hanoi) with a head injury, were assigned to be monitored and treated on site. The patients continued to receive remote professional support from doctors at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.
As soon as receiving information about the accident this morning, Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital immediately activated emergency operations to organize the reception and treatment of the patient.
In addition to these 3 patients, there was also Mr. LVT (40 years old, motorcyclist) who was diagnosed with facial trauma and concussion, and was transferred for treatment and monitoring to the Department of Trauma - Orthopedics - Burns of the provincial hospital.
At around 8:20 this morning (July 22), the Pa Thom suspension bridge cable broke. At that time, there was a car and a motorbike on the bridge. The accident caused the car carrying 3 people to fall into the river. In the car was an official of Thanh Yen commune who was on his way to carry out the task of fighting storm No. 3, Mr. LXT (43 years old), Head of the commune's Economic Department. The person riding the motorbike was Mr. LVT (40 years old), a resident of Thanh Yen commune.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Chairman of Thanh Yen Commune People's Committee, said that immediately after receiving the news, the commune government quickly mobilized forces to be present at the scene to rescue, and at the same time provide first aid and medical care to the victims.
According to Mr. Tuan, Pa Thom suspension bridge was built in 2004 and was just repaired in 2024.
Pa Thom Bridge is 84m long, 2m wide, with a designed load capacity of 2 tons. This is a vital traffic route, serving the daily travel needs of people in Pung Bon, Pa Thom, Huoi Moi and Pa Xa Lao villages in Thanh Yen commune.
