According to information from Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC), the hospital's Burn and Plastic Surgery Department recently received and treated a case of severe electrical burns.

The patient is Mr. NTT (32 years old). According to the medical history, on May 20, while repairing a signboard light, the man was electrocuted by a medium-voltage electric current. The patient was taken to a local hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital because the injury was too severe.

At the Burn and Plastic Surgery Department, doctors recorded that the patient had electric spark burns on the face, neck, trunk, and limbs covering 41% of the area, including 12% burns on the trunk, left arm, and right hand.

In addition to the burns, the patient's thighs and wound area were also in a state of no pain. In addition, Mr. T. had limited mobility in his neck, shoulders (risk of contractures in the armpits on both sides, front of the neck), elbows on both arms and hips on both legs.

During treatment, the patient must lie in one place and cannot move or move in bed.

With the above condition, the patient was treated for burn injuries and coordinated with the Rehabilitation Department in therapeutic activities.

After many weeks of active intervention by specialists, the patient's wound improved and the range of motion of the shoulder, elbow and hip joints improved.

The patient can also sit up, move around, perform basic daily activities such as eating, drinking, washing face... and is discharged from the hospital.

According to statistics, in recent weeks, the Burn - Plastic Surgery Department, Cho Ray Hospital has received many cases of electrical burns due to daily activities and work, causing serious consequences.

Doctors analyze that there are two mechanisms that cause electrical burns. One is burns caused by electric sparks, which are usually mild and require a short treatment time. The second is burns caused by electric current passing through the body, radiating heat and burning from the inside. This type of burn is severe and very deep.

When the electric current comes into contact with the body on a direct transmission line, the areas with high resistance (such as wrists, elbows, armpits, and areas with many tendons) generate a lot of heat, and these areas often result in amputation. Not to mention complications such as heart fibrillation and ventricular fibrillation caused by electricity, causing the patient to have cardiac arrest and die on the spot...

From the treatment experience, the doctor recommends that contractors, builders, and power line managers must adhere to safe distances and provide adequate protective equipment for workers. People, especially workers, should pay attention to ensuring their own safety when working near power lines.

"People should absolutely stay away from high-voltage power lines, and when traveling on the road in rainy and windy weather, they must pay close attention to avoid hitting power lines and causing unfortunate accidents," the doctor advised.
