Longcaoping Aquaculture Zone has leveraged Big Data and IoT technologies to transform traditional industries. They have introduced automatic fish feeding systems, aerators and environmental monitoring systems since February.

Cha Guangyuan, manager of Longcaoping, said that automatic data collection was realized after using smart devices.

“Water quality is a key factor in aquaculture. Technology-based aquaculture reduces risks associated with water quality, thereby increasing productivity and ensuring stable revenue growth,” said Mr. Cha.

The smart aquaculture platform also helps workers monitor pond temperature and water quality in real time, and remotely control fish feeders and aerators with just one click on the phone screen. Previously, such work required 10 people, but now only needs 3.

According to Mr. Cha, cold-water fish find an ideal habitat in this area thanks to favorable climate and water quality. The farm mainly raises sturgeon and this year's output is estimated at 200,000 kg.

Another industry that has benefited from technology is beekeeping. Li Fei, director of China Mobile Foping, said the “smart beehive” monitors the beekeeping environment in real time, significantly reducing losses due to pests and diseases. When the beehive falls into an abnormal state, the beekeeper will be notified in time to take countermeasures.

Li Ning, an official with the Foping Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau, added that the smart beehive uses solar panels to power the sensors.

IoT technology allows beekeepers to check temperature, humidity and sound in real time, and assess the health of bee colonies, predict growth cycles and honey production.

Thanks to mobile applications, beekeeping tasks are done remotely. Meanwhile, a lot of information about the hive and the bee farm is sent to the beekeeper's phone. Compared to traditional methods, modern beekeeping technology increases honey production and protects the bee colony from pests.

According to Mr. Li, 11 households in Foping County are engaged in beekeeping. In the first half of this year, 7 households participated in the smart beekeeping pilot project, introducing 50 smart beehives. There are about 22,000 beehives in the county, with an annual output of 250 tons of honey, worth 25 million yuan.

Foping Smart Agriculture is one of 10 digital rural initiatives supported by the China Internet Development Foundation to revitalize rural areas.
