Son Heung-min has been the captain of the Korean team since the 2019 Asian Cup.

According to Yonhap , coach Hong Myung-bo is considering handing over the national team captaincy to another player. At the same time, the former Tottenham star may also have to sit on the bench more in the national team in the near future.

When asked if Son Heung-min would continue as captain of the national team, coach Hong Myung-bo gave an ambiguous answer: "I have not made any decision yet. The important thing is not how long Son Heung-min plays, but his role in key moments."

According to Korean media, the ambiguous statement of the head coach of the Korean team implicitly shows that Son Heung-min may have to give up the captain's armband to someone else, while minimizing his influence on the team's playing style.

Having just turned 33 in July, Son Heung-min is no longer at his peak. His move to Los Angeles FC after more than a decade playing in the Premier League has also raised questions about his contribution to the Korean national team.

Son Heung-min will certainly still be called up to the national team in the near future. However, the fact that "Sonny" is no longer playing in the world's top tournament like the Premier League will make doubts about his ability greater. Especially in the context of the Korean team setting high goals at the 2026 World Cup.
