Singapore surpasses Japan to own the world's most powerful passport

This index ranks passports based on the number of countries the passport holder can enter without a visa and is based on data from the International Air Transport Authority.

Accordingly, Singapore is at the top of the list of passports. Japan previously held the number 1 position but has since dropped to number 2, along with France, Germany, Italy and Spain, all of which allow access to 194 countries.

US passport holders can travel to 188 countries around the world without a visa, placing the country in eighth place among the world's passports in terms of global mobility. Passports from 27 other countries offer higher global mobility than the US passport.

Here are the countries with the most powerful passports, ranked by number of visa-free travel options, based on the 2024 Henley Passport Index.

1. Travelers will be able to visit 195 countries visa-free by 2024 if they have a Singapore passport.

2. Holders of Spanish, Japanese, Italian, German and French passports will be able to travel to 194 countries visa-free by 2024.

3. Passport holders from Sweden, South Korea, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland, Finland and Austria will be able to visit 193 countries visa-free by 2024.

4. UK, Danish and Belgian passport holders will be able to visit 192 countries visa-free by 2024.

5. Travelers will be able to travel to 191 countries visa-free by 2024 if they have a passport from Norway, Portugal or Switzerland.

6. Holders of Greek, Maltese, New Zealand and Australian passports can visit 190 countries without a visa.

7. Travelers will be able to visit 189 countries visa-free by 2024 with passports from Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic or Canada.

8. Travelers will be able to visit 188 countries visa-free by 2024 if they have a US passport.

9. Holders of Estonian, Lithuanian or UAE passports will be able to visit 187 countries visa-free by 2024.

10. Latvian, Slovak and Slovenian passport holders will be able to visit 186 countries visa-free by 2024.
