Supercomputer 'shocks' when predicting about MU

Despite drastic reforms, the Opta supercomputer predicts that MU will still not be able to return to the top half of the Premier League table and has less than a 1% chance of winning the championship.

After their worst season in more than half a century, MU's summer tour of Chicago, New Jersey and Atlanta surprised everyone by winning the Summer Series League with an unbeaten record.

They have two consecutive wins, including a 2-1 win over West Ham United and a 4-1 win over Bournemouth, followed by a 2-2 draw with Everton.

With a total spending of over £120m this summer, Man United have proven that their absence from European competition does not mean a lack of attraction in the transfer market. However, the latest predictions from the supercomputer Opta have left many Man United fans worried about the team's comeback ambitions.

Falling out of top 10, at risk of relegation

As scheduled, Opta's artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer continues to predict the final positions of clubs next season.

Essentially, Opta's prediction model estimates how likely teams are to finish the season based on round-by-round results.

According to Opta , the model will estimate the probability of a win, draw or loss using odds and a proprietary ranking built by the platform.

In addition, this AI also considers the strength of the opponent by using the probability of match results and simulating the remaining matches in the tournament thousands of times.

By analyzing the results of each of these simulations, the model can see how often teams finish in each position in the tournament to create a final prediction.

As a result, after 10,000 tests of every possible scenario in the Premier League this season, the supercomputer predicted that MU's most likely ranking next season would be 12th, with a total of 49.1% chance of happening.

Digging deeper into the results of each position, the "Red Devils" chance of reaching the top 4 next season is only 6.7%. Meanwhile, the probability of MU not reaching the top 10 of the Premier League is up to more than 50%. Even the results of 10,000 tests show that the team at Old Trafford still has an 11% chance of being in the relegation group.

Another team that surprised everyone was Tottenham, who were predicted by the supercomputer to be ranked 14th. These are also the two teams with the biggest change in rankings compared to Opta's predictions last season.

Exciting championship race

Just like last season, the supercomputer believes that there will continue to be a "three-horse" race in the Premier League next season with competition from Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City.

Even the 10,000 predictions are very close, with no team having more than a 30% chance. With new signings like Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitiké, Liverpool are the clear favourites to win the title, having done so in 28.5% of simulations.

Mikel Arteta has finally added a standout number nine to his squad in Viktor Gyökeres. The addition of the Swedish striker has seen the supercomputer nearly double Arsenal's title chances from last season (12.2%) to 24.3%.

Meanwhile, Man City is the team with the biggest drop in championship rate, from 82.2% last season to only 18.8% in simulations.

Chelsea are on a high after winning the FIFA Club World Cup last month and are favourites to win their first Premier League title since 2016/17. However, the supercomputer shows the Blues will only win the league in 8.8% of scenarios, and are more likely to finish fourth again.

Not only the title race, the battle for European qualification is also much more open. In fact, even Sunderland, who are predicted to finish bottom of the table, have a 5/10,000 chance of finishing in the top 4.

Crystal Palace's strong finish to last season with the first major trophy in the club's history, the FA Cup, was well received by the supercomputer.

Specifically, Crystal Palace achieved a top-four finish in 21.6% of simulations, surpassing opponents such as Brighton & Hove Albion (16.8%), Bournemouth (10.1%) and Nottingham Forest (8.9%).

In contrast to the exciting races in the top half, the relegation predictions continue to see a repeat from all three newly promoted teams this season: Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland.

If this prediction comes true, this will also be the first time since the 1997/98 season that the last two seasons have seen all three teams promoted back to the lower divisions immediately.

Another interesting statistic is that Liverpool were the only team predicted not to finish bottom of the table in any of the 10,000 simulations. However, the English champions were still relegated 7 times. Arsenal’s relegation scenario happened 10 times, while Man City did it 22 times.
