This is an important milestone recognizing the research achievements of the team of experts led by Associate Professor, Dr. Ngo Duy Thin after nearly 3 years of developing customized implant technology using PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) biomedical material. The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health , Hanoi Department of Health, Medical Equipment Association, Vietnam Medical Association, Hanoi Union of Science and Technology Associations...

Optimum point of Peek material skull graft in clinical application

In Vietnam, every year there are thousands of cases of skull bone defects due to accidents, brain tumors or surgery. Meanwhile, traditional treatment methods still have many limitations: Autologous skull grafting has the risk of bone loss, collapse, and a complication rate of up to 37%; manual titanium mesh skull grafting in the operating room has low accuracy and aesthetics, and can easily cause interference during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

In that context, Ngoc Bao's personalized 3D printed PEEK graft is considered the optimal solution with many outstanding advantages: High biocompatibility, easy to assemble, precise skull shape restoration, unlimited size and suitable for all skull areas - including difficult locations such as complex skull and face areas.

On July 4, 2025, the Ministry of Health officially licensed this device with the trade name "Skull graft made from PEEK material", code 2502433DKLH/BYT-HTTB.

The product is 3D printed according to each patient's CT image data, ensuring absolute accuracy in size and shape, and can be sterilized and ready for use in surgery.

The highlight of this manufacturing process is that the patient does not need to go to the manufacturing facility, but only needs to send data on the bone defect area. After a maximum of 2 weeks, they will receive a device that fits the defect area that needs to be restored. Because it is a personalized device, the surgeon can operate it easily, shortening the patient's surgery time and hospital stay.

Associate Professor, Dr. Ngo Duy Thin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ngoc Bao Medical Biotechnology Joint Stock Company, said that it took the company 7 years to have a domestically produced group D medical equipment product and have it licensed for circulation by the Ministry of Health. In order for this material to survive in the body, product quality is of particular importance.

Up to now, 200 patients have been successfully implanted with this device at provincial and central hospitals such as: Hai Duong General Hospital, Xanh Pon Hospital, Thanh Nhan, Viet Duc, 108... The longest case is 7 years and the most recent is a patient treated at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital.

Specialist II, excellent physician Nguyen Van Trung, former Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, Hai Duong General Hospital, was the first doctor to use this material in surgery for a patient with a skull defect due to traumatic brain injury. After surgery, the patient recovered well.

"Currently, the patient has a slight mental disability, but the forehead is stable, anatomically balanced, and has shown no signs of infection or graft rejection over the past 7 years," Dr. Trung shared.

Early inclusion of Vietnamese-made materials in health insurance payments

Dr. Nguyen Minh Loi, Director of the Department of Infrastructure and Medical Equipment, Ministry of Health, said that Ngoc Bao Medical Joint Stock Company has spent 5 years waiting for assessment and licensing. This is a long journey full of determination for the unit.

According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Loi, recently, the Ministry of Health has had many innovative reforms in medical equipment management.

“If in the early days of 2020-2021, there were about 17,000 unlicensed medical equipment files of type C and D, then up to now we have processed 97%, about 1,000 files have been read and evaluated but not yet licensed. We give special priority to domestically produced products that are licensed first,” said Mr. Loi.

The Ministry of Health is currently researching, developing and perfecting policies to develop the domestic medical market. At the same time, the Ministry is also working with the health insurance agency to soon have supplies such as the Peek skull graft partially covered by health insurance, to support people to soon access good quality products.

He also hopes that in the coming time, many domestic manufacturing enterprises will contribute ideas to help the Ministry of Health perfect institutions and policies, helping the domestic medical equipment manufacturing market develop.

Affirming the creativity and research capacity of scientists through this product, Dr. Len Xuan Rao, Chairman of the Hanoi Union of Science and Technology Associations, said that the association is committed to continuing to create all conditions to promote member units to promote creative achievements, contributing to the development of the socio-economy.

Sharing on the sidelines of the launching ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Ngo Duy Thin said that not only stopping at launching the skull implant device, Ngoc Bao Biomedical Joint Stock Company is also developing a series of other biomedical implants from PEEK material such as: eye socket grafts, maxillofacial, radius, talus, spinal disc, upper end of humerus, jaw angle implant...

The unit also researches devices for replacing joints, long bones after cancer surgery, silicone finger joints...

Ngoc Bao's PEEK skull graft is one of two medical devices selected by the Ministry of Health to display at the Socio-Economic Achievements exhibition celebrating the 80th National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
