North Korean Beer Pub Officially Opens in Pyongyang

(CLO) In one of the new districts in the North Korean capital Pyongyang, a modern beer hall has officially opened, attracting the attention of local people.

A video released by the North Korean state has revealed a large modern-style restaurant in Hwasong, an eastern suburb of Pyongyang, which took two years to build as part of a massive expansion of the capital Pyongyang.

When visiting Pyongyang, tourists have the opportunity to enjoy a unique beer, produced by the state-owned company, Taedonggang - named after the river that flows through Pyongyang.

In 2000, the Ushers Brewery in the English town of Trowbridge closed after 175 years of operation. Kim Jong-il, the then leader of North Korea, bought the entire brewery at auction.

The entire factory was transported to North Korea and reassembled with the help of German experts.

In 2002, Taedonggang Beer Company officially started operating. Notably, since 2016, the company has started exporting its beer products to China.

Beer bars like Taedonggang are only found in the capital Pyongyang and are not common in other regions. Instead of famous brands, locals often choose home-brewed beers from small breweries.

Beer accounts for only about 5% of alcoholic beverages consumed in the country, while spirits are more popular, accounting for 95%.

In Pyongyang, only men are given a certain number of beer coupons. These restrictions mean that upscale beer halls like Taedonggang will only attract a limited number of domestic customers and a handful of international tourists .
