Pho from the perspective of cultural heritage

On June 2, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Nam Dinh province organized a scientific seminar "Pho in the contemporary context from the perspective of cultural heritage".

At the seminar, cultural and culinary researchers clarified the origin, cultural elements, community connection through cuisine and issues related to preserving and developing the pho profession. These are important bases for compiling a dossier to include pho in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang, Department of Cultural Heritage (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), the preparation of a dossier to include pho in the list of national intangible cultural heritage must comply with the procedures and regulations of the Law on Cultural Heritage.

On the other hand, it is necessary to identify related factors to decide on the name of the heritage, thereby focusing on the factors and types that create the unique and typical values of the heritage.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Van Bai, Vice Chairman of the National Cultural Heritage Council, said that in order to include pho in the list of national intangible cultural heritage, the government, specialized agencies, especially those who are preserving and developing the Nam Dinh pho making profession, need to present unique features expressed in all stages from preparation, selection of ingredients, food, methods of making typical fresh pho noodles; processing stages, completing a delicious, quality, nutritious bowl of pho.

Mr. Dang Van Bai said that cultural authorities at all levels are responsible for coordinating and guiding the community to implement activities to protect and promote the value of culinary culture in general and Nam Dinh pho in particular.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Nam Dinh province, Do Quang Trung, also affirmed that the opinions of researchers, experts, local authorities and the community have continued to clarify the value, contributing to promoting Nam Dinh pho to all classes of people and domestic and foreign tourists.

In particular, identifying pho in the contemporary context will be the scientific basis for completing the dossier components to include pho in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
