Su 22 pilot in crash awarded certificate of merit, promoted

(Dan Tri) - The Minister of Defense sent a letter of commendation and decided to promote pilot Do Tien Duc from captain to major after handling the Su 22 that had an accident.
After the Su 22 plane crash in Quang Nam , Minister of Defense Phan Van Giang sent a Certificate of Merit and a letter of commendation to pilot Do Tien Duc for his calm and intelligent actions in handling the unexpected situation in the air, minimizing the loss of life and property of the people. At the same time, the Ministry of Defense decided to promote pilot Do Tien Duc from captain to major.

The letter from Minister of Defense Phan Van Giang reads: "Sincerely send to Comrade Major Do Tien Duc, Squadron Leader of Squadron 1, Regiment 929, Division 372, Air Defense - Air Force.Dear comrade! On January 9, 2024, while implementing the training plan of Regiment 929, you were assigned to pilot Su-22M4 aircraft with serial number 5880 to conduct a training flight.When completing the mission and piloting the aircraft to the airport to land, the aircraft encountered a technical problem and could not land safely.You reported to the flight commander and received the order to parachute. In a very short moment and the aircraft was in an emergency state at low altitude, falling very quickly, possibly endangering your life, you calmly piloted the aircraft away from densely populated areas and parachuted safely, minimizing damage to people's lives and property.

Previously, on January 9, Regiment 929 (Division 372, Air Defense - Air Force) organized a training flight at Da Nang airport as planned. The training aircraft was a Su 22, serial number 5880, piloted by Captain Do Tien Duc, Squadron Leader of Squadron 1; took off at 11:04. At 11:14, the pilot reported that the aircraft had problems and could not land. The pilot tried to move the aircraft away from densely populated areas and parachuted. The aircraft crashed and was damaged in Dien Nam Trung ward, Dien Ban town, Quang Nam province. The incident damaged houses and crops, and injured one resident. The pilot parachuted safely and is in stable health.
