Surgery to remove giant facial tumor for ethnic minority

The patient suffered from giant ameloblastoma of the lower jaw bone, affecting his appearance and daily life. Doctors at the 108 Military Central Hospital spent 9 hours on brain surgery to remove the tumor and reconstruct the patient's face.

Patient Vang Thi Thu Trang (born in 2009, H'Mong ethnic group, residing in De Cho Chua A, Pung Luong, Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai ) has very difficult circumstances, living with her grandparents since childhood because her father died early and her mother remarried.

The patient was diagnosed with giant ameloblastoma of the mandible but due to difficult family circumstances, he did not seek treatment.

On July 10, the patient was taken to the 108 Military Central Hospital for examination by benefactors. After understanding the patient's medical condition and difficult circumstances, with the consent of the Hospital's Board of Directors, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Duc contacted the patient to directly examine and provide free treatment.

The patient was admitted to the hospital and had surgery on July 29. The hospital also arranged accommodation for the aunt and uncle who were accompanying him to take care of him.

Patients are scanned, digitally reconstructed, and 3D printed of lesions to plan treatment.

Doctors said this was a difficult case, the patient was only 16 years old, small, the tumor was large, the tumor destroyed 2/3 of the lower jaw bone, malocclusion, causing deformation of the lower half of the face. During surgery, the patient was at high risk of bleeding. After the tumor was removed, the patient would lose almost all of the lower jaw bone.

The doctors proposed a surgical plan to remove the entire tumor, using microsurgery techniques to bring the fibula skin flap from the lower leg up to recreate the lost jaw bone to adjust the shape of the face as well as create conditions for future tooth restoration.

The surgical team of 7 doctors from the Center for Craniofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery, led by Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Duc, director of the Center, as the main surgeon, along with a team of 1 doctor and 2 nurses from the Department of Anesthesia, 108 Central Military Hospital, performed the surgery in 9 hours, completely removing the tumor and the lower jaw bone measuring 15x10x6cm, and reconstructing the lower jaw bone using the fibula.

After surgery, the patient was taken to the Intensive Care Unit for monitoring and is currently in stable condition.

The surgery demonstrates the humanity of the military medic. In addition to the task of caring for and protecting the health of senior officials of the Party, State and military, the 108 Central Military Hospital also examines and treats the people.
