The seminar "Vietnam Education Publishing House in the cause of developing reading culture for students" took place on August 29 within the framework of the exhibition of the country's achievements in the 80-year journey of Independence - Freedom - Happiness at the National Exhibition Center, Dong Anh, Hanoi.
Guests at the panel discussion
At the seminar, writers, poets, teachers and representatives of the Vietnam Education Publishing House exchanged and discussed with readers about a number of issues related to developing a reading culture and building libraries in schools.
Poet Tran Dang Khoa, Vice President of the Vietnam Writers Association, emphasized the role of teachers and school librarians, who help students learn about the content of books; guide them in the process of searching and selecting books for reference, study and entertainment. Therefore, training and improving the expertise and professionalism of this team plays an important role in promoting a reading culture in schools.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Principal of Trung Vuong Secondary School, Hanoi , discussed at the seminar.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dang Diep, Chairman of the Council of Literary Theory, Vietnam Writers Association, believes that reading books will help nurture the soul and shape the personality of the young generation. Therefore, adding a variety of books in schools will help stimulate curiosity so that students can choose more books in their after-school entertainment activities.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Principal of Trung Vuong Secondary School, Hanoi, shared: Currently, organizing activities to develop reading culture and form reading habits for students faces many difficulties, due to the influence of many other entertainment media (social networks, internet...).
Along with that, the habit of reading needs to be nurtured in each family, parents and family members must set an example to form the habit of reading books daily for their children. However, in reality, due to busy work and many other factors, families have not paid attention to forming the habit and love of books for their children.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, in recent times, the school has paid great attention to forming and developing a reading culture for students. At Trung Vuong Secondary School, many activities have been organized such as competitions to introduce favorite books; drawing illustrations of situations in books; drawing characters in books; designing reading areas in the schoolyard in a friendly and close model...

To equip students with good reading skills, the school also focuses on guiding them in choosing books to read. In addition, with the 2018 General Education Program, the Literature tests using new materials not found in textbooks are also a way to encourage students to expand their reading beyond the content learned in the program.
From the process of observing and talking with students, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha also said: Students often choose multimedia book products (with text channels, images, audio channels, not too long content, using modern language). This is also a suggestion for publishers when compiling and publishing publications for students.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Tung, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam Education Publishing House, said that the issues and solutions raised at the seminar are all of practical significance to schools, parents, students and publishing units, including Vietnam Education Publishing House. The organizers hope that the opinions at the seminar will contribute to forming reading habits for students, aiming to build a generation of students who are not only good at knowledge but also have a love and skill for reading.
