Promoting the effectiveness of the model "Trusted address for violence prevention"

The model “Trusted Address for Violence Prevention” has been implemented by the City Women’s Union since 2020, contributing to arousing the spirit, responsibility, and community support in protecting women and children from acts of violence and abuse. With a creative, flexible approach, suitable to local realities, the model has created a safe, close, and accessible support network for the community.

Ms. NTNL (Hoa Tho Dong Ward, Cam Le District) has a difficult family situation, earning a living by collecting scrap metal; her husband is a bricklayer with an unstable income, hot-tempered, often drunk, and abuses his wife for no reason. Because she loves her children, Ms. L. is patient and works hard to take care of her family. Knowing the above situation, the Sac Cam Club (under the Women's Union of Hoa Tho Dong Ward) has approached, listened to and determined to accompany Ms. L. many times. In the past, the Club has regularly encouraged the husband to change his behavior and behave responsibly towards his family. Gradually, the husband began to listen, restrain himself, and the domestic violence no longer recurred.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Nga, Vice President of the Sac Cam Club in Hoa Tho Dong Ward, said that the club was established in 2023 with 15 members and is a trusted address for preventing and combating domestic violence at the grassroots level. Not only promoting the law on gender equality and violence prevention, club members have repeatedly visited homes to mobilize, mediate, and persistently approach violent subjects to change their perceptions from the root. Up to now, the Sac Cam Club has successfully supported, consulted, and mediated many cases of family conflicts, contributing to building a safe and equal living environment for women in the community.

In addition to preventing and combating domestic violence, the local police have coordinated with the police and other units to actively support children in difficult and disadvantaged circumstances. Realizing that some students in the area are in difficult circumstances and at risk of dropping out of school, the Hoa Tho Tay Ward Police (Cam Le District) coordinated with the Women's Union of the ward to implement the "Lighting up Dreams" model to support them in going to school. A typical example is Ly Ha Thu (Hoa Tho Tay Ward), a 9th grader, orphaned by her father and mentally ill mother. The house she lives in is in an alley, dilapidated and leaking during the rainy season. Faced with this situation, the ward police officers and soldiers supported the construction of a concrete road leading to the house, installed two street lights, repaired the house and gave many school supplies to help Thu feel secure going to school.

The model of "Trusted Address for Violence Prevention" was established to support women and children who are victims of violence and abuse. Accordingly, the Women's Union at the commune and ward levels propagates and mobilizes individuals and organizations with prestige to voluntarily act as trusted addresses in the community to help victims of domestic violence; support, advise, arrange temporary shelters for victims and notify competent authorities. Along with that, the association's bases increase propaganda and training on preventing and combating domestic violence and protecting trusted addresses in the community. To date, the city has established 375 trusted addresses in 47 communes and wards with 1,386 participants, of which 199 addresses have registered for temporary residence support when necessary. Over the past 5 years, trusted addresses have supported 187 people who have been victims of violence and at risk of violence. Of which, 15 people received psychological counseling; 104 people received legal counseling; 33 people received health care; 12 people received livelihood support, 23 people received temporary shelter support.

According to the representative of the City Women's Union, the model "Trusted Address for Violence Prevention" is a practical initiative, formed in residential areas with the voluntary participation of dedicated groups and individuals. Not only providing timely support to women and children who are victims of violence and abuse, the model is also an effective propaganda channel to help raise community awareness about preventing and combating domestic violence. With the nature of being close to the people, for the people, and promoting the people's strength, the above model is a typical example of "skillful mass mobilization" that will continue to be maintained, strengthened and expanded by all levels of the Women's Union in the coming time. This is an important step, contributing to building Da Nang city into a civilized urban area, free of violence against women and children.
