(CLO) Italian police have just confiscated dozens of fake artworks of famous artists such as Picasso and Rembrandt in a "secret painting room".

The investigation, carried out by the Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Command in collaboration with the Rome prosecutor's office, began when authorities tracked down fake works for sale online.

According to a press release from the police, they seized a total of 71 paintings, and also determined that the suspect had sold "hundreds of suspicious works" on platforms such as eBay and Catawiki.

Among the confiscated paintings were forgeries by Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Mario Puccini, Giacomo Balla, Afro Basaldella and many other famous artists.

The fake paintings were discovered in a house in northern Rome, where police found a room used to create fake works. There, they seized hundreds of tubes of paint, brushes, easels, along with fake gallery stamps and artist signatures.

The suspect, described as a "forger and restorer", possessed typewriters and computer equipment to create fake paintings and forge certificates for the works.

One of his tricks was to edit auction catalogs, replacing the master's original works with fake images he created, making them appear genuine from the start.

In addition, police also discovered many paintings in the process of completion, bearing the signatures of different artists, indicating that they were recently made.

No arrests have been made and the suspect's identity has not been released.
