According to The Hill, on February 27, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting in early March, and will also impose additional tariffs on goods imported from China.

“Fentanyl is still flowing into the United States from Mexico and Canada at unacceptable levels. A large amount of Fentanyl is coming from China, and we cannot let that continue.

The 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico will take effect on March 4. On that day, goods from China will also be taxed an additional 10%, on top of the previous tariffs," Mr. Trump said.

The US President stressed that the tariff moves will only stop if the fentanyl smuggling situation ends or is strictly controlled.

President Trump had previously postponed tariffs on Canada and Mexico in early February, after the two countries pledged to strengthen border security.

According to CNN, on February 27, Canadian officials confirmed that they have implemented many surveillance measures at the border. But if the Trump administration is not satisfied, Ottawa is ready to impose tariffs on major US exports.

On the Chinese side, after the 10% US tariff took effect on February 4, Beijing immediately responded.

Specifically, Beijing has applied new tariffs on imported goods from the US since February 10. Of which, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal are subject to a 15% tax. Crude oil, agricultural machinery and trucks are subject to a 10% tax.
