"No one wants peace more than Ukraine," Zelensky said, adding that he and the United States are working on the next steps to deter Russia and ensure a lasting, reliable peace. "We believe that the strength of the United States, together with Ukraine and all our partners, is enough to force Russia to move toward peace," Zelensky said.

Ukrainian presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak said President Zelensky had stressed to Mr Trump that the fighting must end in “a just peace”, according to AFP. Mr Yermak said “the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine” could not be compromised.

The official said the two sides agreed to work immediately at the official level toward an agreement and were also arranging a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders.

On the same day, President Zelensky hosted US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Kyiv, where the two sides discussed a new document on security cooperation, economic cooperation and resource partnership.
