(CLO) US President Donald Trump has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House next week, according to a US government official. The invitation came just hours after a US military plane departed to bring deported immigrants back to India.

Earlier, on January 27, Mr. Trump had a phone call with Mr. Modi, in which the two sides discussed immigration policy, urging India to buy more US-made security equipment and ensuring fair bilateral trade relations.

The Indian government is looking to expand trade ties with the United States, make it easier for Indians to get skilled work visas, and avoid the tariffs that Mr. Trump has threatened to impose on Indian exports.

Mr Trump has previously criticised India for imposing high tariffs on US goods, particularly agricultural and technology products. Negotiations to reduce tariffs and make it easier for US goods to enter the Indian market could be a key issue in the upcoming meeting.

Currently, the US is India's largest trading partner. In the 2023/24 financial year, the total two-way trade turnover exceeded $118 billion, of which India had a trade surplus of $32 billion with the US.
