The model was implemented at 3 locations: Hai Hung commune (Hai Lang district), Trieu Co commune (Trieu Phong district) and Gio Hai commune (Gio Linh district). Using the new Grimaud duck breed with a quantity of 1,000 ducks/location.
This is a meat duck breed bred and developed by the Grimaud Group (France). It is considered a duck breed with a fast growth rate, short rearing time, high productivity and meat ratio, well adapted to the tropical climate conditions in Vietnam, so it is suitable for industrial and semi-industrial farming.
In particular, instead of raising in traditional methods such as combined pond farming and open-field farming, the model is carried out in the form of confinement on a floor about 40 - 50 cm higher than the barn floor, the barn floor is made of material with gaps of 1 - 1.5 cm so that duck droppings fall onto the barn floor; the barn floor is inclined for easy cleaning.
As a result, after 1.5 months of raising, the ducks reached an average weight of over 3.2 kg/duck, with a survival rate of 95.7%. With a selling price of 42,000 VND/kg, after deducting costs, the model gave a profit of about 18.7 million VND/point, 1.5 times higher than the traditional raising method.
According to the assessment, in addition to higher profits, using the Grimaud meat duck breed will help farmers shorten the raising time, thereby helping to rotate the raising batches faster, being able to raise 4-5 batches/year.
Applying the method of raising ducks on bio-safe floors helps to significantly reduce the amount of waste released into the environment because manure and wastewater are collected centrally, limiting soil, water and air pollution compared to combined pond farming models.
On the other hand, when raised on the floor, ducks are isolated from the surrounding environment, which will limit the risk of infection compared to ducks raised using pond water or released into the fields, thereby reducing the cost of veterinary medicine, especially preventing dangerous diseases.
