Volcano near Iceland's capital erupts again

A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted on July 16, spewing hot yellow and orange lava and smoke, officials said. This is the 12th volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula near the capital Reykjavik since 2021.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Service, the volcano spewed lava flows through the Earth's crust, creating a large fissure 700-1,000 meters long. Based on measurements using the Global Positioning System (GPS) and monitoring signs of changes in the Earth's crust, the agency said this was a relatively small eruption and there was no warning of any impact.

Flights at Keflavik Airport in the capital Reykjavik were also unaffected.

However, people at the luxury Blue Lagoon resort and the nearby town of Grindavik were evacuated.

Grindavik was home to nearly 4,000 people before an evacuation order was issued in 2023, and few have returned to live there due to the constant threat of volcanic lava flows and earthquakes.

Experts say volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula will continue for decades, even centuries, to come.

Iceland is an island nation in the North Atlantic with many glaciers and volcanoes. It has witnessed consecutive volcanic eruptions since the geological system in the Reykjanes Peninsula became active again in 2021./.
