Unmaintained landscaping gives a shabby appearance to a special national monument.

Degradation from many causes

After many heavy rains, the Vinh Hung tower area is often flooded, sometimes the water rises to the foot of the tower, creating long stagnant ponds. Although the tower body was previously reinforced, due to the effects of weather and erosion over time, the outer brick layer is peeling off more and more. The foot of the tower has been soaked in water for a long time, causing weeds to grow wildly, seriously affecting the landscape. Notably, since being recognized as a special national monument, this area has not yet implemented any significant conservation or development projects.

The area at the foot of Vinh Hung tower was flooded after heavy rains.

Despite being reinforced with metal bars, the bricks on the tower's body still fell to the ground.

Mr. Tran Thanh Tuan, Chairman of Chau Thoi Commune People's Committee, said that the locality has prepared a report on the current flooding situation, and proposed that the Provincial People's Committee and related departments and branches such as the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Department of Agriculture and Environment organize a field survey. In the immediate future, the commune has assigned local forces to temporarily handle drainage, clean up the environment around the relic and fence off dangerous areas to ensure safety. In the long term, the locality has proposed that the province raise the foundation of the relic site, especially the base of the tower, and equip a high-capacity pumping system to overcome flooding during the rainy season.

Algae and golden apple snails grow around Vinh Hung tower during the rainy season.

The paving bricks inside the monument are quite peeling.

Comprehensive investment proposal

Vinh Hung Tower is one of the rare architectural works that still stands firmly on the ground and bears the open-air characteristics of Oc Eo culture - a famous ancient culture in the Southern region. Unlike many other Oc Eo relics that only have the foundation or are underground, Vinh Hung Tower is still quite intact. Notably, 5 artifacts have been discovered here that are recognized as national treasures, further affirming the special historical, cultural and scientific value of this relic.

The head of the Shiva statue found at Vinh Hung archaeological site has been recognized as a national treasure.

Ranked as a special national monument by the Prime Minister, Vinh Hung tower is not only the pride of the people of Ca Mau - Bac Lieu , but also an important part of the treasure of tangible cultural heritage of Vietnam. With typical values of history, art, architecture and archaeology, the monument deserves to receive attention and appropriate investment for effective preservation and promotion.

Many valuable artifacts are displayed at the relic to serve tourists and local people.

Deputy Director of Ca Mau Provincial Museum Nguyen Van Sinh informed: The unit is coordinating with relevant departments to propose to the Provincial People's Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to allow the establishment of a master plan, expanding the protected area of the relic. In particular, priority items include: building a roof to limit the impact of weather, restoring the tower body, maintaining the architectural structure and surrounding landscape.

In addition, the Provincial Museum also proposed expanding the exhibition space, arranging more tour guides and relic management staff, gradually turning this place into an attractive historical and cultural tourism and education destination for people and tourists inside and outside the province.

Oc Eo culture, at least in its central area in the South, along with the history of the kingdom of Phu Nam in this land, is part of Vietnamese culture and history. Oc Eo culture is part of Vietnam's cultural heritage, and Phu Nam history is a component of Vietnamese history,” said the late Professor Phan Huy Le, former President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association.
