Farmers "struggle to withstand the cold and rain for their vegetables"

Prolonged cold and wet rain

The fields of Van Noi commune (Dong Anh district) were bustling early in the morning. Each person had a job, quickly taking care of and harvesting vegetables. Some farmers urgently installed plastic roofs to protect their crops.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Noi (Tho Bao village, Van Noi commune) said that after Tet, her family planted 4 sao of green vegetables, mainly leafy vegetables. The drizzle and humid weather in recent days has affected the quality of vegetables.

“I heard from the meteorological agency that the weather will get colder in the coming days, so I have to go to the fields to check and install additional nylon dome systems to cover and protect the vegetables…” - Mrs. Noi added.

In another large vegetable growing area of Hanoi in Tien Yen commune (Hoai Duc district), farmers are also busy in the fields producing. This is a specialized area, supplying the market with hundreds of tons of various vegetables every day.

Mr. Kieu Duy Hong in Tien Le village (Tien Yen commune) said that his family has 3 sao of agricultural land specializing in growing various vegetables. Having only planted for about two weeks, Mr. Hong pays close attention to care.

“Cold weather can cause green vegetables to turn yellow. My family had to invest in installing greenhouses and net houses to minimize the impact, although the initial investment cost is quite expensive…” - Mr. Hong shared.

Not far away, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tien, also in Tien Le village, was urgently preparing the land, hoping that the weather would be warmer in the coming days so that she could start the new crop. This is because when the weather is below 15 degrees Celsius, seeds will have difficulty germinating and will grow and develop slowly.

Recommendations for farmers

In fact, in recent years, farmers in Hanoi have approached and been very proactive in applying care techniques, so they are less affected by the weather. Many households have boldly invested in greenhouses and net houses to limit the impact of weather factors on crops, especially rain, wind, cold, frost, etc.

Director of Dong Cao Agricultural Service Cooperative (Trang Viet Commune, Me Linh District) Dam Van Dua said that in the cold and drizzle, using plastic covering film is a popular solution being used by people to protect crops, especially vegetables.

“Along with ensuring a balanced water source, we recommend that people add more nutrients, add manure, sprinkle ash or rice husks, to help vegetables grow well in cold conditions…” - Mr. Dam Van Dua added.

According to Head of the Hanoi Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection Luu Thi Hang, after Tet, localities are entering the planting season with a total area of about 8,000 hectares of various vegetables. When the temperature drops too low with prolonged drizzle, it will affect the growth and development of vegetables.

To limit damage caused by cold rain, the Department recommends that people promptly harvest areas that are ready for harvest to reduce losses. Do not plant intercropping vegetables when the outdoor temperature is lower than 15 degrees Celsius.

People should also use nylon, straw, and rice husks to cover beds, make roofs, and install net houses and greenhouses to protect plants from the cold. At the same time, pay attention to care, water enough, and fertilize in balance, combined with composting to keep vegetables healthy and increase their ability to resist the cold.

For vegetable areas that are slightly damaged and can be restored, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that farmers apply NPK fertilizers, organic fertilizers, foliar fertilizers, micronutrient fertilizers, growth stimulants, etc. according to the manufacturer's instructions to increase the growth of crops.
