In order to support the development of the domestic environmental energy industry through providing services such as consulting, eco-friendly exhibitions and educational projects, etc., on December 31, 2013, the Korea Global Energy Environment Economy Research Institute was established under license No. 475 of the Ministry of Environment.

Also with the goal of improving the quality of life for residents and creating a sustainable urban environment through diverse environmental services, the Busan City Government established the Busan Environmental Corporation (BECO) to manage essential environmental infrastructure, including domestic and industrial wastewater treatment, waste management, air quality improvement and resource energy recovery, contributing to the realization of a low-carbon green city.
BECO oversees 13 wastewater treatment plants, incineration plants, and landfills across Busan, which process 2 million tons of wastewater per day and manages 2,500 kilometers of sewer pipes, along with 1,900 pumping/drainage facilities. In addition, two incineration plants process 540 tons of municipal waste per day, and the landfill has a total capacity of 20 million tons.

To promote energy saving and resource recycling, BECO is actively involved in the development of environmental technologies, such as biogas power generation from sewage sludge and providing recovered heat from waste incineration.
Furthermore, BECO actively carries out its social responsibility through environmental education for citizens and public awareness campaigns.
