On January 2, Tuoi Tre Online recorded at Tac Cau fishing port, Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang province, the number of fishing boats returning to port is increasingly crowded. The last sea trip of 2024 brought with it the expectations of fishermen, the ship's hold full of fish and shrimp to have a full Tet for the family.

Output has improved and prices are favorable, so fishing boats have a stable income to enjoy the Spring Festival. Mr. TTH - residing in My Lam commune, Hon Dat district, Kien Giang province - said that he has 4 fishing boats, the weather is favorable so output and exploited reserves show signs of recovery.

Especially during Tet, consumption is higher than usual, seafood prices tend to increase slightly by about 10-20%, so year-end sea trips are more profitable. This is the motivation for fishermen to continue going out to sea.

“Currently, each pair of fishing boats has about 15 fishermen. Each fisherman earns about 10 million VND/month. All the fishermen are excited and hope this is a good sign for their upcoming trips to the sea,” said Mr. H.

In the middle months of 2024, due to the impact of weather, high costs of raw materials and fishing fees, most fishermen did not have high profits. Therefore, the last trip of the year partly compensated for the previous difficulties.

Mr. Ngo Van Lam - Head of Kien Giang Fishing Port Management Board - said that the province currently has nearly 9,700 fishing vessels. In 2024, fishing vessel owners brought nearly 25,000 tons of various types of fish to Tac Cau fishing port, a decrease of nearly 1,800 tons compared to the same period. Fishing output in 2024 compared to the same period decreased because many fishing vessels were stranded.

“There are nearly 1,300 ships docked, which also affects the province’s seafood output. As a result, the profits of fishing boat owners have also decreased sharply,” said Mr. Lam.
