According to Neowin , the layoff storm continues to rage in the gaming industry, this time the victim is Riot Games owned by the giant Tencent, the father of the famous MOBA game League of Legends and recently the shooting game Valorant .

In a blog post, Riot Games CEO Dylan Jadeja and President Marc Merrill announced the layoffs of 530 employees, or 11% of the company’s total workforce. Jadeja said those affected will receive at least six months of severance pay, an additional bonus equal to their 2023 performance bonus, and other benefits.

Riot Games will focus on developing the company's major titles, including League of Legends, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics , and Wild Rift . For Legends of Runeterra , the development team will be streamlined and focused on The Path of Champions game mode. Director Dave Guskin will leave the team behind Legends of Runeterra but will continue to work at Riot Games.

Riot Forge, the publishing arm of Riot Games that supports small independent studios in the League of Legends universe, will also be shut down. Riot Games is still working on new titles, including "Project L," a 2v2 fighting game that is expected to have more details by the end of 2024.

This is just one of a series of major layoffs in the tech industry in general and gaming in particular in January 2024. Some other famous names include Discord (17% of employees), Twitch (35% of employees), Lost Boys Interactive (a large number of employees) and Unity (25% of employees as of March 2024).

These events show that both the technology and gaming industries are facing major challenges, requiring companies to take drastic steps to restructure and adapt to the new economic climate.
