The North is the epicenter of this heat wave, recording record high temperatures in August.

Regarding the current heat wave, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said: During the two days of August 3-4, the Northern region, provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien Hue and the Southern coastal region experienced widespread heat and severe heat. In particular, the Northern Delta was the epicenter of this heat wave, recording record high temperatures in August: Lang ( Hanoi ): 39.7°C; Phu Ly (Ninh Binh): 39.3°C.

Mr. Nguyen Van Huong pointed out 3 main causes of the record heat in the North: due to the strong activity of the hot low in the West, pushing dry and hot air to the region; the divergent wind field at high altitude (1,500-3,000m, from North to Northwest) causing less clouds, clear sky, increasing the intensity and duration of sunshine; the West to Southwest wind at low level, blowing from Thanh Hoa to the plain, carrying the foehn wind effect, making the air hotter and the humidity lower.

At 1:00 p.m. on August 4, humidity in Hanoi and the delta was only 47-52%, causing a dry, uncomfortable feeling.

The combination of the three above factors makes the Northern Delta region the hot spot of this heat wave.

Forecast: On the evening and night of August 4, a low pressure trough will move through the North, causing thunderstorms in the midlands and mountainous areas.

From the afternoon and night of August 5, thunderstorms will spread widely across the North, heat will decrease, only occurring locally in the plains (temperature 35-36°C).

By August 6, when more rain appeared, the impact of the hot low, foehn wind and high-altitude divergence completely ended, ending the heat wave.
