The 'captain' of the Mong village

For more than 20 years, he has been elected by the people as the Head of Na Sang Hamlet and a prestigious person among the Mong ethnic group (Phu Do Commune, Phu Luong District). Mr. Hoang Van Nhin is not only a "bridge" between the government and the people, but also a person who dares to think, dares to do, pioneers in changing production thinking, gradually improving the lives of the people here. Currently, although he no longer holds the role of hamlet chief, the mark of a person who is devoted to the common good remains forever.

Imprint of Hamlet Chief Hoang Van Nhin

From the center of Phu Do commune, we followed the winding concrete road to the old Na Sang village (now Phu Tho hamlet), where most of the Mong people live. Asking for directions to Mr. Hoang Van Nhin’s house, everyone knew because they were familiar with the image of the hamlet chief “eating at home, carrying the prison and the village”, going to each household to propagate and mobilize people to donate land for road construction. Developing afforestation and harvesting corn is more convenient…

Chatting with Mr. Hoang Van Nhin in his spacious house, we were invited to enjoy a cup of tea that he personally took care of and dried. Taking a sip of hot tea, he said: I was elected by the villagers as the Head of Na Sang Hamlet in 2004. At that time, the hamlet had only more than 20 households. People's lives were still very difficult when the economy depended mainly on corn and rice. Everyone did their own thing, there was no connection, no seasonality, so economic efficiency was low. The roads were all dirt roads, not convenient for trading and traveling...

As a hamlet chief, a prestigious person in the community and a party member, Mr. Nhin always worries about finding ways to help people escape poverty. For that reason, he actively participates in training courses on farming and livestock raising techniques; participates in experience learning sessions in many localities inside and outside the district. Even when he hears of a good model suitable for the local land, he travels there, learns, then applies it and teaches it to the people in the hamlet. Sometimes he incorporates propaganda into hamlet meetings; sometimes he goes to the fields to pick tea with the people, taking the opportunity to share what he sees and hears with the people.

Mr. Nhin concluded: “Each locality has its own strengths in agriculture . Therefore, we must choose a model that is suitable for the soil and climate in our village.”

To prove what he said is true, according to Mr. Nhin: "If you want people to believe and listen, first of all, you have to be the one to do it first and show them the results." With that in mind, Mr. Nhin took the lead, converting all 3 hectares of mixed garden land, previously planted with midland tea, to grow TRI777 and Kim Tuyen tea varieties. At the same time, he invested in 2 tea roasting sheets and 4 tea rolling machines to proactively process, avoiding being forced to lower prices by traders.

Thanks to the synchronous application of science and technology, on average, each crop, he harvests 7-8 quintals of fresh tea buds/ha. After deducting expenses, he earns about 80 million VND/year. In addition, with 14 hectares of forest, Mr. Nhin does not let the land "rest". As soon as this forest area is exploited, another forest area continues to be planted. After 6 years of planting, his family also has an income of nearly 100 million VND/ha of forest.

When Na Sang and Phu Tho come together as one

In 2024, Na Sang hamlet merged with Phu Tho hamlet, forming the new Phu Tho hamlet, with 84 households, of which over 90% are Mong ethnic people. Although he is no longer the hamlet chief, Mr. Nhin is still trusted by the villagers and elected as a prestigious person, the "captain" of the village. He still enthusiastically participates in all common tasks; enthusiastically shares agricultural cultivation techniques for the villagers to follow...

Thanks to that, people's awareness has gradually changed. Many areas of mixed gardens and previously abandoned vacant land have been planted with new tea varieties (LDP1, TRI777, Phuc Van Tien...) by the people following "Captain" Nhin; planting hybrid rice, pure rice... for high productivity and quality; planting forests...

Up to now, 90% of the 30 hectares of tea in Phu Tho hamlet are new varieties; 24 hectares of tea have been certified to meet VietGAP standards. The hamlet has 2 established tea production cooperatives, namely Phu Do Safe Tea Cooperative and Thanh Dat Tea Cooperative. Most households in the hamlet have forest areas. Small households have 2-3 hectares, large households have up to 15 hectares of forest. On average, after 6-7 years of planting, people can exploit nearly 100 million VND/ha of forest.

Mr. Hoang Van Phinh, a resident of Phu Tho hamlet, informed: With Mr. Nhin's sharing and technical guidance, I boldly planted TRI777 tea variety on the entire 4,000m2 of existing garden land. On average, I harvest 7 batches each year, yielding more than 200kg of fresh tea buds/batch. The family's economy has therefore improved a lot compared to before.

Thanks to appropriate propaganda and his own pioneering work, Mr. Nhin has "convinced" people to believe and follow him to develop the economy. Currently, the average income per capita of the people in the hamlet reaches 45 million VND/person/year; the poverty rate has decreased to 9 households...

Along with economic development, Mr. Nhin also contributed to building a civilized lifestyle in Mong Phu Tho village. He often reminded and encouraged people not to marry early; not to have a third child; not to organize lavish and wasteful funerals. The conventions and village regulations were built by him and the Party cell, incorporated into village meetings and strictly maintained.

Mr. Phung Thanh Ha, Chairman of Phu Do Commune People's Committee, commented: Mr. Nhin is always a pioneer and exemplary person in all movements, especially economic development. With perseverance and enthusiasm, he not only changed the production mindset of the people but also contributed to changing the rural appearance in the highland commune of Phu Do.
