Mr. Ly Van Tinh was born and raised in Phi Hai commune, Quang Hoa district, Cao Bang province. At the age of 8, he started learning to play the panpipe. At the age of 20, because he could not afford to buy a panpipe, he learned how to make it himself and made his first panpipe.

In 1982, Mr. Tinh, his wife and four children migrated to Ya Hoi commune to make a living. Although life was still difficult, he still took advantage of his free time to practice playing the panpipe. Thanks to that, his panpipe became more and more skillful. “Each panpipe song is a story, a voice, an emotion conveyed through sound. The more I study, the more I understand the cultural depth and national pride hidden in each melody,” Mr. Tinh shared.

Not only is Mr. Tinh good at playing the Khen, he is also skilled at making and repairing this musical instrument. "Making a Hmong Khen is not difficult, but to make the Khen have a good and standard sound, in addition to being meticulous in making it, the maker himself must put his whole heart into each stage of making the Khen," said Mr. Tinh.

Along with playing the Khen, dancing the Khen is also an art that requires flexibility, endurance and skillful techniques. To master the Khen dancing movements such as: going forward, going backward, spinning in place, rolling sideways, playing the Khen... people must practice seriously from a young age. With the passion to preserve and pass on the culture of the nation, Mr. Tinh has actively taught the Khen playing, making and dancing to the younger generation.

In 2023, Ya Hoi commune opened a class to teach khen for 30 students, mainly young people. Mr. Tinh is the one who directly teaches the class, teaching both the technique of blowing khen, making khen and performing khen dance.

“Now, I am old and my eyesight is a bit poor. However, I still want to pass on my knowledge and experience to the younger generation so that the Mong flute will not be lost. I just hope that the next generation will understand the value, preserve and promote the cultural beauty of the nation,” Mr. Tinh confided.

Studying since 2023, Mr. Ly Thien Toan (born in 2006) was instructed by Mr. Tinh on how to breathe, keep the rhythm, place his fingers and feel the melody to match the spirit of each Khen song. Thanks to Mr. Tinh's dedicated teaching, Mr. Toan progressed very quickly.

“Mr. Tinh teaches very meticulously and wholeheartedly. Thanks to him, we not only learn the techniques but also understand the profound meaning of the Khen sound in the life of the Mong people,” Mr. Toan confided.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Tinh also participates in performing at local festivals and cultural events. Currently, the local government is completing the application to recognize Mr. Ly Van Tinh as a Mong flute maker.

In addition, he was also honored by the Provincial Veterans Association with 8 honorable golden words "True to the country, warm comradeship"; the Provincial Elderly Association honored him with 18 golden words "The older the age, the higher the ambition, setting a shining example for the cause of building and defending the Fatherland". In 2022, he was awarded a certificate of merit by the Chairman of the Dak Po District People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in building the movement of the whole people to protect national security in the period of 2016-2021.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Ly Van Thang - Cultural and Social Officer of Ya Hoi Commune - said: Mong village has 56 people who know how to play the flute, but only Mr. Ly Van Tinh has enough skills to make and repair the flute. He is the only one who retains all the skills and teaches them to the next generation. To promote the cultural identity of ethnic groups, the local government regularly organizes community cultural activities. At the same time, it coordinates with artisans to open dance and flute-playing classes for the younger generation, contributing to preserving and promoting traditional cultural identity.
