Suspect in murder of 42 women in Kenya has escaped

Mohamed Amin, head of Kenya's Criminal Investigation Department, said Collins Jumaisi Khalusha escaped along with 12 other Eritrean nationals arrested for entering the country illegally.

Kenya Police Acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli said disciplinary action had been taken against eight police officers, including area and station commanders and on-duty officers.

“Our preliminary investigation shows that the escape was aided by insiders as officers were deployed to guard the police station,” he said.

A police report said the inmates escaped on Tuesday morning after they cut through the wire mesh in their cells and climbed over the perimeter wall. The escape was discovered as breakfast was being brought into the cells.

Khalusha, 33, was remanded in police custody after the court granted investigators seven more days to investigate his alleged crimes before charging him.

Khalusha was arrested in July after 10 bodies and body parts were found wrapped in plastic bags in the Kware area of the capital Nairobi. Police said Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife.

The police station where the suspects escaped has been sealed off and senior police officials visited the site on Tuesday afternoon.

In July, police said the victims' bodies were discovered after relatives of a missing woman said they had a dream in which she told them to search a cliff.

Relatives called in a local diver for help, who discovered the bodies wrapped in sacks. Six bodies were identified after DNA testing, but some body parts remain unidentified.
