Russia praises Trump for criticizing Ukraine's airstrikes deep into Russian territory

(CLO) On December 13, the Kremlin praised US President-elect Donald Trump for criticizing Ukraine for launching long-range Western missile attacks deep into Russian territory.

In an interview with the New York Times published on December 12, Mr. Trump criticized Ukraine's use of US-supplied missiles to attack Russian territory. He described this as "crazy" because it escalated the conflict and Washington should not allow this to happen.

"This statement is completely consistent with our position," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. He said Mr Trump's remarks were consistent with "our vision of the reasons for the escalation" and that Mr Trump understood what was causing the situation to escalate.

Russia says US President Joe Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles to attack Russian territory could lead to world war.

On December 11, Ukraine attacked a military airfield on the Sea of Azov with six ATACMS missiles supplied by the United States. Following the ATACMS missile attack in November, Russia responded by launching a new hypersonic ballistic missile called the "Oreshnik" into Ukraine, while President Vladimir Putin declared that Russia had the right to attack US and British military facilities.

The Kremlin also said that discussions about the possibility of deploying European troops to monitor the ceasefire were premature, but did not completely reject the idea.

“All these issues need to be discussed during the negotiations,” Peskov said, stressing that Russia wants not just a ceasefire but a lasting peace , which will only be achieved when Moscow’s conditions are met.

On the terms of peace, Mr Putin declared in June that Ukraine should abandon its ambitions to join NATO and withdraw its troops from four regions of Ukraine that Russia claims as its own.
